When the first-generation Subaru Outback debuted in 1994, it was a station wagon based on the second-generation Subaru Legacy -- and one that would soon gain traction among outdoor enthusiasts everywhere. By 1996 and some key structural enhancements, including a raised suspension, the model had already begun turning into a rugged sport utility. The second generation, in 2000, would bring with it the line's first six-cylinder engine, and a highly popular off-roader would take shape.
The third-generation Outback would follow soon after, in 2005, sporting a longer wheelbase and overall length, and in 2006, it'd get a few interior and exterior style updates. 2010 and the fourth generation, however, would offer an even more powerful engine, and styling would be refreshed yet again for 2013. Subaru would even unveil its iconic driver-assist system, EyeSight, the same year.
By the fifth generation in 2015, Outback had long since become a full-fledged line of crossovers, now with a revised BOXER engine and a stiffer chassis. Today, after a sixth-generation redesign on the Subaru Global Platform in 2020, which brought with it Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard on every trim, it's still one capable SUV, and more than a few traces of wagon heritage remain. The model's become well-regarded, too: for safety, by NHTSA and IIHS, and for its capabilities and value, by Kelley Blue Book, Experian Automotive, and more.
