Subaru Leone was one storied compact car, running from 1971 all the way to 1994. If you're less familiar with the name, you might know the Subaru BRAT better: that acronym for Bi-Drive Recreational All-Terrain Transporter was a coupe utility version of it than ran from 1977 on. The third-generation Leone, however, was called Subaru RX in the US, and it was a memorable one -- one that would, in fact, prefigure today's beloved Subaru Impreza.
It was a trio of small cars made up of a three-door hatchback coupe, a four-door sedan, and a five-door station wagon -- one that would take off once it got a major redesign in 1985. A performance model would come out soon after in 1987, and a similar model, Subaru RX Turbo, would compete in the World Rally Championship from 1980 until its run ended in 1989.
