OEM Subaru Brakes

When you step on your brake pedal, your Subaru slows and stops. Straightforward, right? How your brakes work, however, is more complicated. What do they do to make that slowing and stopping happen? It starts with your brake pistons. They move along the bore of your brake cylinder. As they do, they force brake fluid through hoses and lines to brake calipers. Each brake caliper has a brake padon it. When the liquid reaches a caliper, it clamps to a brake rotor. Older Subaru models may substitute a brake shoe and brake drum. Newer Subaru models may include a control module or some wheel speed sensors in the process. Either way, the caliper and rotor (or shoe and drum) rub together, creating friction. This resistance slows your wheels down and eventually stops your tires.

Signs Your Subaru Brakes Are Failing

Unfortunately, all brake parts go bad sooner or later, even those Subaru makes. They get too old or too damaged. So, when do you change a set of brakes? Look for signs of brake problems. Warning lights, brake shudders, abnormal noises, or an overly soft or low brake pedal are some of the most obvious. Loss of brake grip, longer stopping times, and pulling sideways unintentionally when braking are worse ones. The worst, however, is a grinding noise. It often means rotor damage, the result of your brake pads wearing out.
